The Jon Stewart Sweater Phenomenon

All right, so whether or not you watched Larry King, you may have noticed Jon Stewart's shock at the fact that he was wearing the same sweater then as he had been wearing on Crossfire.

If you think that's a little on the "I love my sweater too much" side, then you haven't seen anything yet.

I present to you

The Jon Stewart Sweater Phenomenon

Exhibit A: Jon Stewart on Larry King Live (December 2004)

Exhibit B: Jon Stewart on Crossfire (October 15, 2004)

Exhibit C: Jon Stewart on Primetime Glick (June 5, 2003)

Exhibit D: Jon Stewart on Richard Pryor:  I Ain't Dead Yet (Date Unknown)

Exhibit E: Jon Stewart on American Perspectives (October 14, 2004) (noted by [info]jennilee)

Exhibit F: Jon Stewart on The O'Reilly Factor (September 17, 2004) (noted by [info]alelsc)

Exhibit G: Jon Stewart on Late Night with Conan O'Brien (Summer 1999) (noted by [info]shape5

Exhibits F-ZZZZZ: Here (Go for the proof, stay for the near-nudity!)
</center>

Here, on 23 separate occasions, on various separate days, years apart in some cases, Jon Stewart is wearing the same sweater.

Perhaps the sweater contains his livelihood.  Perhaps it is what he was wearing when Satan dropped him off as Anti-Christ at the Liebowitz' doorstep, and he wears it all the time underneath his Daily Show attire, like Superman.  Perhaps he is a robot.  Perhaps he has sentimental attachment to the sweater.  Perhaps he really does work at Bennigan's because Comedy Central doesn't pay him anything and so he is forced to wear that sweater.  Perhaps he has an entire closetful of the same sweater, like on Doug. Perhaps he is a robot assuming human attire.

We may never know the truth, but we are one step closer.

With the same shirt underneath! That is insane! We should really send him a new one.

Umm.. in blue.

[info]doubtful_salmon

December 13 2004, 05:50:01 UTC 7 years ago

Perhaps we should just send him a letter.

It can go like this:

I know what you did.

It makes me sick.

I'm going to tell.

I do like that sweater though, so maybe there should be a P.S.

Maybe that's the clothing he's comfortable with? Like me in summer even, I feel more comfortable in public with a jacket on, usually the same one. Or maybe I'm just weird... Oh well.

[info]doubtful_salmon

December 13 2004, 05:51:13 UTC 7 years ago

Oh yeah, it does look uber-comfortable. I have a strange attachment to this blue sweater and have had it for five years.

It's just kind of amusing to observe this tendency and also, that the sweater is still in good condition.

That was truly weird. I read your comment and thought, "That sounds like something I would type," since I have been known to give gold stars before, and then I went to look at your user info, and you're friends with my boyfriend. It's a small livejournal world afterall!

Maybe it's his "I'm stepping out in public" sweater for television appearances.

Or he thinks Black makes him look thinner. ;)

[info]doubtful_salmon

December 13 2004, 05:53:02 UTC 7 years ago

I don't think that's it, because he seriously looked surprised when he saw that he was wearing the same sweater on Crossfire as he was on Larry King. They were showing it in split screen, "Am I wearing the SAME SWEATER?!"

JON! You make serious money, my man. I know you have a college fund to worry about but take your sexy ass to a store goddamn it. :)

[info]doubtful_salmon

December 13 2004, 05:53:55 UTC 7 years ago

I maintain that he never changes. He just must wear it all the time.

I mean, think about it. When have you ever seen him wearing short sleeves?

Don't forget the Two C-SPAN appearances...

I think it's totally hilarious that I think it's odd that he wears the same sweater many times over but I, myself, have worn each of my sweaters more than 6 times each...

btw, where'd you get the richard pryor vid?

[info]doubtful_salmon

December 13 2004, 05:48:32 UTC 7 years ago

Oh yeah! But I'm pretty sure the C-SPAN appearances were on the same day as the Crossfire one, they just aired on different dates.

And yeah, I wear the same stuff all the time too, but I think it's funny he does it even when somebody like me is going to figure it out one day.

Richard Pryor was just on Comedy Central a couple weeks ago and I TiVo'd it, so I don't know where to get it online.

I was thinking I saw him wear that sweater more than once. Way to have some motivation and track down those screen shots...

I think the whole sweater things stands out to us because

1) He always looks so spiffy in those suits
2) I hate to say it, but it's not that great of a sweater. I mean come on, with the t-shirt showing underneath? Once or twice would have been cool, but does he have to wear it whenever he leaves the daily show set?

[info]doubtful_salmon

December 13 2004, 05:57:38 UTC 7 years ago

Actually I had these all on TiVo and I just took pictures with my digital camera, which is why they're such terrible res pictures.

It stands out to me because he mentioned it on Larry King, and I was watching the other two immediately afterward.

But yeah, we probably would have figured it out anyway.

Perhaps he is genetically linked to the sweater!

I actually happened to be watching these all in the same day. I had them all TiVo'd and thought hey, I'll have a mini-Jon Stewart marathon!

And then I noticed he was wearing the same thing in all of them.

December 13 2004, 07:10:27 UTC 7 years ago

I'd wager money on him having worn it during an America: the Book reading that was on C-SPAN not too many weeks ago.

Maybe he only has two outfits when he's not working. Suit, and sweater.

Though honestly, if it were at all possible without wasting a lot of money on laundry or febreeze, I would probably wear the same thing every day.

But I'm glad I'm not just totally insane for thinking the Larry King sweater was the same as the Crossfire sweater.

Yay!

[info]doubtful_salmon

December 13 2004, 07:40:19 UTC 7 years ago

No! He said they were the same sweater, or at least they look eerily similar.

And yes, we have discussed the America reading and have concluded that he switched the undershirt and the sweater around.

December 13 2004, 07:14:24 UTC 7 years ago

Move over Versace and Betsy Johnson, this season is all about the Jon Stewart sweater. I can see it all now, mothers fathers, children, dog, they will all be wearing his sweater combo, and that is when he'll have us where he wants us. To do what I'm not sure. Possibly a global take-over scheme of some sort, or maybe just invite us inside his home for a nice glass of Sunny D.

[info]doubtful_salmon

December 13 2004, 07:41:09 UTC 7 years ago

You're so right!

maybe our dear Jon is a true lover of the term "If it aint broken dont fix it" cause his sweater looks good on him. It would be fun oneday if someone refered him to What Not To Wear & he'd cry because they throw away his beloved sweaters.

OR

Hes like Einstein, wearing the same style all the time but a nice quantity of the same thing. Like a cartoon character such as.. Hey Arnold.

[info]doubtful_salmon

December 13 2004, 07:43:05 UTC 7 years ago

Actually we discussed that earlier! The cartoon thing, I mean. Because I thought of that one episode of Doug where he opens his closet and reveals that he actually has that many outfits, and it's not just a freaky cartoon idiosyncratic thing, it's Doug himSELF!!!

I agree though, he does look good in the sweater, so I have no objections.

Actually he looks good in most things.

Actually, he looks good in all things. Even with a pen in his eye.

One could argue that, but you'd think he'd throw the idea of the "good luck" sweater out the door after Crossfire, wouldn't you?

[info]rashaka

December 13 2004, 08:33:59 UTC 7 years ago

is that a shirt underneath, or just part of the collar? Cause if it's a shirt, he must like the two together. Like a necessary pair: HE SHALL NOT WEAR ONE WITHOUT THE OTHER, AND SHALL WHERE BOTH WHENEVER HE CAN AS LONG AS NO ONE CATCHES ON.

[info]doubtful_salmon

December 13 2004, 23:04:14 UTC 7 years ago

That is a shirt underneath, and I am quite certain that's a shirt he wears on several occasions as well, which is clearly indicative of the sweater's presence.
